Thrifting sounds great in theory, but sometimes it can be intimidating. The sheer amount of clothes to sort through can be daunting and you won’t always find what you’re looking for. But shopping should be fun, so here are a few tips to level up your thrifting experiences.

Know Where You’re Going

Before setting foot in a secondhand store, think about what type of shop you’re looking for. Thrift shops and vintage or consignment boutiques, though both secondhand, cater to different needs. If you’re looking for unique and inexpensive items that might have their fair share of wear, thrift is for you. If you’re willing to spend a bit more on high quality, often designer items, try going vintage.

Go in With Few Expectations

If you’re looking for something very specific, thrifting might not be your best bet. The easiest way to go in is with loose expectations or none at all — instead of looking for a specific piece, try keeping your eyes peeled for garments that just stick out to you, or clothing in a more general style you’re looking for.

Don’t Be Afraid to Dig.

While many stores curate their selections carefully, others — especially big ones — are bound to have a lot of pieces that don’t fit your taste. Don’t let that deter you! Sometimes it takes time to find the gems in a huge secondhand store. In the end, it’s usually worth it.

Keep an Eye Out for Fabrics You Like

One of the easiest ways to have a successful thrifting trip is by expanding your search past already-perfect pieces. Look at garments like opportunities. Maybe there’s a skirt with an amazing print but a not-so-great shape? Take the fabric and make something else with it! There are tons of easy ways to refresh thrifted garments, many of which don’t even require a sewing machine!

Consider Your Needs

Remember, everyone is thrifting for different reasons. If you can afford necessary items like winter coats and gloves from elsewhere, consider leaving them for people who might need them more. In the same vein, think about thrifting off-season and try not to buy things you don’t love just because you can!
