Girl to Know: Jade Purple Brown
If you spent summer 2020 walking along the streets of Manhattan or Philadelphia, it’s likely you stumbled upon the eye-catching works of visual artist Jade Purple Brown. The New York City artist uses graphic design, illustration and art direction to create bold, colorful, vibrant art used as visual messages of optimism. Empowerment is the spirit of Jade Purple Brown’s work.
Her Hoping, Wishing, Waiting piece is showcased as Adobe Illustrator's 2021 splash image. Portrayals of strong, women of color, particularly Black women are the driving force and muses in her collection. She even authored a book, Words To Live By, a spotlight of 50 illustrated quotes by 50 inspiring women much of whom are Jade’s past and present role models.

In the docuseries Make It Real Jade talked about leaving her comfort zone of having a good full-time job. Majority of freelance artists struggle between having and doing it all just so you can do what you love to do. Jade went from working a demanding full-time job to freelance projects that kept her up until the wee hours of the night, until she finally wanted to do success on her own terms.
