Idea Through Image: Nadine Ijewere
Written by Alexa Wilson
Nadine Ijewere is a London-based photographer who is not here for the same old, same old in fashion. Informed by her Jamaican-Nigerian heritage, Ijewere draws upon the ideas of identity and diversity. In particular, her work dismantles the stereotypes associated with how non-Western cultures are portrayed in fashion and places non-traditional models as the storytellers of her work. For her Stella McCartney campaign, Ijewere turned her lens to her hometown of Lagos, shooting on location and featuring the young people in the area.
“I think what always drew me to editorial stories was the concept of communicating an idea through an image, because I’ve always related more to images than text. What I like about fashion editorials in particular is that you can mix both imagery and clothing, and if you are trying to bring forward an idea or point, you can actually use fashion to elevate it. Especially when I go somewhere like Nigeria or Ghana, I can incorporate fashion into my images so it isn’t just a straight documentary project or simple fashion shoot. Instead, I combine the two so that I fall somewhere in the middle. (Another Magazine)”
Although her editorial photography is strongly rooted in storytelling and that has to come from a place of fantasy, she is still able to bring in such a sense reality and vulnerability with her use of natural light and how her models interact with each other as well as their space.
