Get Crafty (Or Look Like It)
I was inspired a few months ago by a sweater I saw online to grab a pair of knitting needles and some chunky yarn and make it for myself.
After a moment of reflection, I realized that as someone who hadn’t knit in over 10 years, that design was a bit out of my reach. But since then, I’ve tried a few more manageable crafting projects and made some of my favorite pieces to wear.
Here’s the thing: we all love new clothes but some of us might not want to spend that extra money or support fast fashion brands. Plus, crafting is just fun (think making friendship bracelets as a kid). Even better, you can fully customize everything you craft! No more wishing that top you just bought fit slightly differently.
All it takes is supplies and perseverance.
And even if the idea of wearing your crafts makes you cringe with the anticipation of looking like you just got out of summer camp, I promise there’s something for you!
Here are some pieces to inspire your creativity (or to buy if you want that look but just don’t have the time or skills!)
LA designer Juliet Johnstone paints these pieces, including baby tees, pants and more, with beautiful lettering and images from nature. We can’t all be this talented at what she does, but give clothes-painting a try with a nicely fitted thrifted piece and some fabric paint!
Nia Thomas, a black-owned slow fashion brand makes these gorgeous hand-knitted garments — including the one that first inspired me!
New York jewelry brand Eden’s Harvest puts together these sophisticated and crafty freshwater pearl necklaces that (in my opinion) make you look like a mermaid.
