Listen To: Bobo & Flex Podcast Discussing Friendships, Boy Probs & Feminism
In my day to day lifestyle, I spend a lot of time driving my car. If I could choose, I would be walking distance to every place I need to go, but that is sadly not the reality I am living in this moment. I probably have to drive at least 20, but closer to 30 or 45 minutes (discounting traffic), to get anywhere from where I live. To stay entertained in the car and keep me from constantly having to choose a new song every two or three minutes, I have recently gravitated heavily towards podcasts. I originally started listening to them because listening to other people talk helps to soothe my driving anxiety on busy highways much more than listening to music does. Perhaps it just gives me something to focus on. My favorite types of podcasts are usually lifestyle-oriented, discussion type podcasts. Tips on improving my quality of life while I am stuck in traffic feels like a better use of my time than listening to the same twelve songs on my most recent playlist on repeat. I am a big fan of Rupaul Charles’ podcast ‘What’s The Tee? With Michelle Visage’ and Emma Chamberlains ‘Stupid Genius’. Recently, my roommate from my freshman year of college introduced me to what is now one of my most listened to podcasts on Spotify. This podcast is Bobo & Flex.
Bobo & Flex is a cross-continental podcast featuring media personalities Bobo Matjila and Flex Mami. Bobo, who could be described as the “host” of the podcast, is a South African influencer currently residing in New York City. She is a jack of many trades, as she also dabbles in hosting talk shows and photography. As a self proclaimed “fashion philosopher”, she not only has worked with many well known brands (Nike, Nordstrom, and L’Occitane to name a few), but delves deep into philosophical discussions with her accomplice Flex. Having grown up in varying environments around the world, Bobo holds a very interesting perspective of what it means to not only be a woman in today's world, but also a minority. Not only are her views as a woman on relationships, sex, and just life in general relatable to listeners, but they are eye opening and thought provoking as well.
Flex Mami, born a Lillian Ahenkan, is a DJ, TV host, “self development sage”, and beauty YouTuber who has been a well known media presence amongst Autralians since 2015. She and Bobo make the perfect podcast duo thanks to their mixture of enthusiastic agreement and civil argument on the topic at hand. Flex prides herself on her ability to integrate critical thinking to “fill in the gaps” during the podcast. She has definitely helped me think about taking a step back to look at a problem or topic of discussion from a different angle to help better my understanding of it.
In the podcast, Bobo and Flex touch on a variety of topics. They talk a lot about relationships; what to look for in a relationship and when to get the heck out of there are common subject matter. They regularly touch on “red flags”, and the less known “pink flags” in a potential or actual relationship. Remembering that Bobo is a self-labeled “fashion philosopher”, there are lots of discussion had between Bobo and Flex that are deeply philosophical, yet still applicable to the way we live everyday life. One of my favorite podcast episodes I have listened to is called “Manifesting Your Best Life in a World With No Free Will”. It actually inspired me to want to take a philosophy class before I finished college. Other frequent topics of discussion are body image, emotional labor, girl code, and heartbreak.
Bobo and Flex are not exclusively available via podcast, either. They have a phenomenal Facebook group called the Bobo and Flex Show that is open to all listeners. It is a platform where listeners can get together and discuss personal thoughts of theirs on recent episodes and also ask the community for life advice. The girls are also very interactive with their followers on Instagram and usually get episode topic ideas from feedback from polls and questions they ask their followers on their Instagram stories. It is truly impressive to me that they have managed to create such a diverse, yet similar community on the internet for women of all races, ages, and backgrounds to share their life story and get to know one another from halfway across the world. I hope you all enjoy their podcast as much as I do.
