Is GRL POWER Sustainable
Femininity has become a staple in girl’s lives everywhere. The girl power train has since left the building and gathered any woman, girl, sister or Spice Girl willing to take a stand towards equality. No more princesses and dainty toys, it’s girls rule and the boys aren’t drooling, but they’re sporting the merch also. Repping the girl power logo is empowering to say the least, it’s also fun to be able to wear something that helps spread knowledge across the globe about the struggles we face as women. The only problem? Not every t-shirt, notebook, headband and sweatshirt out there promoting this are made sustainably. As a rule of thumb in 2019, if the clothing you’re wearing isn’t made sustainably, it’s just adding on to the problems we’re facing as a nation here on Earth.
Sustainability is the new wave this year and we’re the generations here serving it. The irony of buying and supporting brands that outsource their products to places like Bangladesh, where the sweatshops are full of women working for less than minimum wage. There are women who have taken this into consideration and have started their own brands on this thought like Nasty Gal and Birdsong. If you look at the amount of people who wear the girl power memorabilia, you would most likely consider it a trend. Even though it could easily pass a trend, I don’t want to look at it that way because it has brought so much recognition to the world. It has been teaching women all over the world to have fun and love yourself and what’s a better combination?
As for the future, hopefully there won’t be a need to wear girl power screen printed tees and stationary sets. As much as I love being part of a community, I hope to see that this phase works and raises awareness in women’s inequality and sustainability as a whole. We’ve already made so many changes in the past 50 years. My only hope is that it can only go up from here. Do your part in bettering our future and look for other ways of sporting the logo, whether you DIY a shirt you repurposed with your friends or support women’s brands that our doing their part in making sure everyone involved is taken care of.
